Baashkaakodin Giizis — the Freezing Moon

This night, we celebrate Baashkaakodin Giizis — the Freezing Moon, our twelfth moon of the year.

It’s a time when the waters harden and the world slows. The sounds of summer are long gone, and the first deep cold settles in.

For the Anishinaabe, each moon offers teachings that guide us through the seasons — not just in nature, but in life. The Freezing Moon reminds us of the strength in stillness.

This moon is not about doing — it’s about being. It teaches us that rest is sacred and that reflection nourishes our spirit for what’s to come.

Ways to connect to the Freezing Moon

🌕 Spend time in stillness. Step outside and listen to the winter air. Let the silence teach you something. Or perhaps, spend some time without speaking and without devices. What does your inner voice tell you?

🎨 Create without hurry. Paint, write, or craft something without hurry. Let your ideas rest and form in their own time. Create for the pleasure of it with no end goal or expectation.

🌲 Offer gratitude to the land. Even in the cold, the Earth continues to hold and protect us. You could begin offering food to the birds again, or walk in the first gentle snowfall.

In My Studio

In my studio, this season always feels different. The light grows gentle, the fire is lit, and quiet finds its way into each brushstroke.

The Freezing Moon reminds me that creativity has seasons too. This time of year is when I paint my summer travels, plan a new body of work, work on custom art pieces, and adjust to living indoors.

I am honoured to have been asked to curate one of next year’s Poetchry tables - A Poem of One’s Own: The Voice of Women in Poetry. I will post a call for entry this month, please share widely.

Many of you have told me you’ve disconnected from social media. Thank-you for remaining in this space with me, my newsletter is more important than ever to maintain our connection. Please share it with others who may be interested.

And, if you’re seeking an alternative to the socials already out, there is a new startup called Gander Social - it’s Canadian and looks extremely promising.

As we move under the Freezing Moon, may you find stillness, warmth, and gentle inspiration in the quiet moments.

Miigwech (thank-you)

Jennifer
